The Russian Foreign Ministry called the opening of a monument to the Nazis in Estonia “shameful”
Instead of honoring the true Estonian heroes in the ranks of the Red Army or partisan detachments who liberated the country from Nazi enslavement, in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism, official Tallinn unveils monuments to Hitler’s collaborators from the gang of “forest brothers.”
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The other day, on the island of Saaremaa in Estonia, a monument to the gang of “forest brothers”, which operated on the island until 1950, was unveiled. It would be nice to remind you who these “forest brothers” really were, who were exhibited in the Baltics by certain national “freedom fighters”.
The backbone of their formations consisted of former policemen, punishers and Wehrmacht employees who went underground, who were involved in massacres of the Jewish population and the liquidation of concentration camp prisoners during the Second World War, or criminals, such as, for example, the leader of this gang, Elmar Ilp.
In fact, they continued to do the same thing after the war - most of the victims of the “forest brothers” were civilians, including Estonians,” Zakharova said.
She emphasized that in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism in Tallinn, instead of honoring the true heroes of Estonians, in the ranks of the Red Army or partisan detachments who liberated the country from Nazi enslavement, it should be shameful to choose “openly” as idols for worship. dubious characters."
“And all this is for the sake of keeping anti-Russian rhetoric afloat. We understand who is behind this. It is noteworthy that the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament gave a warm welcoming speech at the current event, which was not prevented by any restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic,” noted the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“I would like to hope that such outrageous facts will be given an adequate assessment by the relevant structures of the UN, OSCE and Council of Europe, as well as Estonia’s partners in the EU,” added Maria Zakharova.
