The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine realized the destructiveness of association with the EU
Ukraine opened its market to European producers, but ended up with a significant increase in the foreign trade deficit.
Director of the Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Sergei Korsunsky stated this in an interview with the Kyiv online publication Apostrophe.
“In 2016, our trade deficit with Europe was 500 million, and today it is four billion. Is this an association and free trade agreement? We opened the market. Any economist will say: if you open the market to a more serious partner with significantly superior industrial potential, you must immediately create conditions for investment and the establishment of production on our territory. All countries in the world that were in a similar situation went this way. We did nothing to prevent this,” said the Ukrainian diplomat.
“As a result, they [Europeans] freely supply us with goods. We increased exports to Europe, but we increased imports even more. This is the wrong policy. The policy must be holistic. We made a decision: we have free trade, we have a visa-free regime. So now the authorities must take care that young people do not leave, that industries are created in our country. The Poles abolished taxes for young people simply to prevent them from leaving the country. What has our government done?” Korsunsky is indignant.
As PolitNavigator reported, in the Verkhovna Rada admitted that the free trade area with the EU turned out to be deception of Ukraine.
