The successful assault by ISIS militants on the Syrian city of Palmyra is explained by the fact that the most combat-ready Syrian units were deployed near Aleppo, writes Kommersant.

The publication notes that on Saturday, with the support of the Russian Aerospace Forces, the assault on the city was repelled, but this success turned out to be short-lived, and by Sunday Palmyra was basically surrendered.

As a source close to the Russian Ministry of Defense told Kommersant, the main reason for the failures of the Syrian army in the Palmyra area was that “the most combat-ready formations from all other sectors of the front were concentrated near Aleppo, where, according to the Syrian command, the decisive battle of the war is taking place.” .
