People who consider Belarus an aggressor came to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense
A scandal erupted in Ukraine and Belarus over an interview that Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Alexander Polishchuk gave to the Belarusian opposition publication Charter 97.
The text itself has already been removed from the site, like most of the news on Ukrainian sites made on the basis of interviews. Polishchuk himself explains this by saying that he talked with Charter two months ago before his appointment to the Ministry of Defense.
According to many commentators, this fact does not remove the question of how it was possible to make a person with similar views a deputy minister. In particular, Polishchuk spoke in favor of closing the Minsk negotiation platform, since “it gives the current ruler of Belarus some additional advantages in his “dialogue” with Western partners.”
“That is, he speculates on this to achieve his own interests. I believe that such direct negotiations should take place, for example, in Donetsk. These should be direct negotiations between us and the Russians. The Russian side must be a guarantor of security,” Polishchuk said.
His thesis about strengthening the border with Belarus, from whose territory aggression is allegedly possible, looks even more scandalous.
“I believe that you cannot isolate yourself from Belarus with just a mesh fence. We must have a serious defense system. Returning to where I started, I want to say: ensuring security along the entire border with Russia and Belarus and giving adequate armed resistance can only be done through a system of well-organized territorial defense, which will be ready to repel invading forces literally within a couple of hours. It’s no secret that from Belarus to Kyiv it’s an eight-hour walk for good military personnel – and that’s it, the troops are already here,” Polishchuk said.
