Minsk says it has corrected itself and asks the EU to lift the remaining sanctions
Belarus calls on the EU to lift the restrictive measures that still remain, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei at a meeting with ambassadors-at-large of the EU member states for Eastern Partnership affairs, TUT.by reported on Tuesday, May 22.
“We regret that in February the European Union extended restrictive measures against Belarus, which have long lost any rational explanation. In this regard, we continue to call on the European Union to lift the restrictive measures that remain,” the minister said.
Vladimir Makei emphasized that positive cooperation over the past few years has brought much more positive results than the previous two decades of sanctions.
As a step towards lifting other restrictive measures, he noted the exclusion of sporting weapons from the arms embargo. The Foreign Minister also welcomed the EU's intentions to expand relations with Belarus and put them on a structured basis.
Let us recall that on February 23, the European Union extended for a year the arms embargo against Belarus and sanctions against four officials whom Brussels suspects of involvement in the high-profile disappearances of 1999-2000.
