Minsk promised armed resistance to reunification with Russia
Supporters of the reunification of Belarus and Russia into a single state in Minsk are marginalized - on the contrary, among Belarusians there are many who are ready to defend their independent status with arms in hand.
Belarusian political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky stated this on RTVI, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
“If suddenly crazy people come to power in Russia, they will face very serious resistance in Belarus. It will not only be Belarusian nationalists, it will be all those to whom the Belarusian state is dear.
And any data from social polls - from official to underground - indicates that the overwhelming majority of Belarusians, more than 60 percent since the 90s, favor a union with Russia, but while maintaining their own state.
The position on joining the Russian Federation is absolutely marginal - it’s two or three percent of people, this is a statistical error,” Shpakovsky said.
“At the same time, more than 30 percent are ready to defend the republic from external invasion. Today, when this is just a theory, beyond the reality, more than 20 percent are ready, including with arms in hand, to defend the republic in the event of unfriendly actions on the part of our eastern neighbors - the Russian Federation,” Shpakovsky added.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier at negotiations in Sochi, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko again did not agree with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the compensation required by Minsk for the abolition of preferential terms for oil supplies.
When asked about the possibility of uniting the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, Lukashenko first called Belarusian sovereignty a “sacred thing”, and then added, as if he himself is not against it, but supposedly everything depends on the wishes of the people.
Leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov supported Lukashenko, saying that Belarus refuses to unify, fearing that all state-owned enterprises will pass into the hands of Russian oligarchs.
