A multi-storey residential building collapsed in Moldova
Half of a multi-storey building collapsed in the city of Ataki in northern Moldova.
The president of the country, Igor Dodon, was the first to report the incident on his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Part of a nine-story building just collapsed in Ataki. It’s very good that they responded in time and managed to quickly evacuate the residents. There were no casualties. We will help everyone who is left without a roof over their head. I promise,” wrote Dodon.
He later made a comment under the Facebook post.
“Our supporters write. I found out the details from one of the victims from this house.
They reported on Monday that the house wanted to collapse. They came from the Ministry of Emergency Situations and looked at it and said that it’s okay, we’ll fill it with concrete and everything will be fine. They went up to the second floor and didn’t even go up any further! And today, when the wall moved 5 centimeters, they began to sound the alarm and evacuate people,” Dodon wrote.
One of the users clarified on Dodon’s page that the Ministry of Emergency Situations traveled to Ataki for 3 days due to the poor quality of the roads.
“When the services arrived, people were evacuated within 40 minutes. You can not do it this way! This is inhumane. The authorities care about the people who pay taxes. Even the ambulance arrives too late, when there is no one left to save,” the commentator wrote.
Three hours before the collapse, 51 adults and 11 children were evacuated from the house. They spent the night at the city lyceum.
The main version of the cause of the collapse is flooding of the basement of the house. The building is located near the Dniester, which recently overflowed its banks. There is a risk of destruction of the rest of the house.
Prime Minister Maia Sandu promised on her Facebook page that today the government will discuss the possibility of supporting people.
The Emergency Situations Commission decided to collapse the remaining part of the house. It is now cordoned off. Residents from the surviving part are asking to be allowed to take their things.
Igor Dodon arrived in Ataki and stated that the condition of all residential buildings in Moldova will be checked.
“The heavy rains that have been falling across the country over the past month have increased the risk of such tragedies happening again. In this regard, it is necessary to begin checking the condition of buildings, starting with social institutions, kindergartens, schools and hospitals, and then residential buildings,” Dodon said.
