The Romanian ambassador was reprimanded in Moldova, but Sandu treacherously remained silent
In Moldova, a scandal continues around Romanian Ambassador Daniel Ionita, who proposed vaccinating the country’s citizens “against primitive Moldovanism.”
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry recommended that the Romanian diplomat “refrain from declarations that undermine the right to pluralism of opinions in Moldovan society.”
Instead of simply apologizing, Ionita said that his words should be considered - in context, and as a joke.
“By primitive Moldavianism I meant those who believe that the Moldavian language is different from Romanian. We consider this the historical legacy of the Soviet period. Moldova is a post-Soviet state. Another example of primitive Moldavianism is when they think that the ethnogenesis of the Moldavian people differs from the ethnogenesis of the Romanian people. That Moldovans are a separate people from Romanians,” argues Ionita.
This outraged the former President of Moldova Igor Dodon.
“I don’t even know how to qualify Mr. Ionita’s statement. Such statements are unacceptable. The Romanian Ambassador must apologize to the Moldovan people. We are friends, brothers, but we will not allow ourselves to be mocked, you are our guest! Can you imagine that our ambassador to Romania could afford this? In a few minutes he would be flying out of the country. Therefore, Mr. Ionita, if you are still not booed on the way because of this, it is only because we are good, hospitable people,” Dodon said in an interview.
Many people have noticed that the new Moldovan President Maia Sandu chose to remain silent. She does not hide the fact that she has a Romanian passport and constantly talks about the priority of relations with Romania in foreign policy. Some political scientists believe that without advertising this, Sandu is leading Moldova to unira - a merger with Romania.
