Moldova proposed holding a referendum on reunification with Russia
The Patriots of Moldova party put forward the idea of a referendum on the issue of the Republic of Moldova joining the Russian Federation. This is the main slogan of the political force with which it is going to the parliamentary elections that will take place tomorrow.
Only joining Russia will give Moldova the opportunity to preserve its identity, the Moldovan language, Orthodox values, and reunite with Transnistria, representatives of this political force believe. The party’s electoral logo – RF – and the slogan “It’s time to go home!” speak for themselves.
“The decision to hold a referendum on Moldova’s entry into the Russian Federation with the status of a republic is vital,” said Mikhail Garbuz in an interview with a PolitNavigator correspondent. – If it is not held as soon as possible – within a year or two – then they will already hold a referendum on joining Romania. And this could really lead to civil war. I am sure that both banks of the Dniester want to go home to Russia! You can’t imagine how enthusiastically people received this idea. There is only one problem – an information vacuum.”
According to Mikhail Garbuz, party representatives asked the leadership of Transnistria for assistance, but received no response. The politician noted that in Moscow the voice of the “Patriots of Moldova” was “heard and will make certain conclusions and adjustments.”
“Carrying out such a referendum without certain support from Moscow is extremely difficult; pro-Romanian forces are working intensively in this direction,” he stated.
Garbuz emphasized that Moldovan parties, which are considered pro-Russian, only “imitate their pro-Russianness” - “for them it is a business and nothing more, a classic waste of money allocated by Russia.”
The Patriots of Moldova party is one of the few in the country that has a clear position on Transnistria, sympathizes with it and believes that the Moldovan authorities should apologize to the residents of the left bank of the Dniester for the bloody events of 1992.
“The Patriots of Moldova party has spoken out repeatedly about who is to blame for the 1992 war. Chisinau and Bucharest are guilty of unleashing a fratricidal war on the Dniester! This is clear. And any dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol must begin with repentance. Why this conflict was started is clear to everyone: to tear the most pro-Russian region away from Moldova for a while, pro-Romanize the right bank (Bessarabia) and then, with the help of Western partners, forcefully return the PMR to Moldova,” said Mikhail Garbuz.
Polls show that this party is not among the candidates with a chance of entering parliament, but Patriots of Moldova will promote its idea of a referendum regardless of the voting results.
“Whether we get into the parliament of Moldova or not is not the point. It is important that we have outlined the only way to unite the country - joining the Russian Federation! And people from both banks of the Dniester heard it - this is the main thing. According to the lists of our party, representatives of the PMR are also running for elections, in particular, Natalya Popova, who worked in the leadership of the state administration of Slobodzeya and Slobodzeya district,” the politician said.
The party talks about the need to “free Moldova from the “political elite”, which has been robbing and mocking the Moldovan people for decades.” According to Michial Garbuz, a country can reboot its political system only in one case – if it is part of the Russian Federation.
11 political parties, two electoral blocs and one independent candidate will take part in the Moldovan parliamentary elections, which will be held on July 20. According to polls, the pro-presidential PAS party is in the lead, which can gain up to half the votes. About a third of voters will vote for the bloc of communists and socialists. Two or three more parties can overcome the 5% barrier.
