“For several days after December 11, at the Chisinau airport, upon departure to Moscow, more than 50 citizens of Russia and other countries who participated in the elections of the head of Transnistria as observers and consultants were detained for a long time and subjected to humiliating searches and interrogations.
They all had their passports confiscated and kept in the inspection room until the plane took off. At the end they were told that they were banned from entering Moldova, some for 10 years, some for 15 years.
In addition, representatives of VTsIOM were not allowed into Moldova, who honestly said at the airport that they were going to cover the elections in Transnistria.
These people did not commit any crimes here. They didn't steal anything, didn't kill anyone. They did not even call for the separation of Transnistria from Moldova and the recognition of its independence. They came to assist and observe the elections of the head of Transnistria, a region that the Moldovan authorities, represented by President Petro Lucinschi, recognized as a legitimate partner on the basis of the 1997 Moscow Memorandum.
It turns out to be a most absurd situation. The leader and leadership of Pridnestrovie are partners of the leadership of Moldova in negotiations and economic cooperation. They meet with them and agree on issues. But the leadership of Moldova does not recognize the election process itself in the region, rudely, boorishly humiliating and insulting the guests of our country,” Bukarsky noted.
