Addressing the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, representatives of Ukraine renounced their repeatedly previously voiced statements that the Ukrainian Navy sailors arrested by Russian border guards during a provocation in the Kerch Strait are “prisoners of war.”

“They shouted that these were prisoners of war sailors, and they tried to include this in the PACE resolution, they shoved it into the resolution of the UN Commissioner for Human Rights. Do you know what is in the Hamburg Tribunal? They categorically deny that this is a military operation, that these are prisoners of war. No mention at all. Because if we recognize that this is a military operation and prisoners of war, this immediately falls out of the jurisdiction of the maritime tribunal,” Kornilov said.

That is, they go out to the public: “Prisoners of War.” But inside, for internal use: “What war? We didn’t declare war, and this is not a military operation, but Russia was conducting a police operation against some peaceful Ukrainian sailors,” the expert concluded.

At the same time, the host of the program, Vladimir Solovyov, ironically noted that these were apparently “fishermen in uniform.”

As PolitNavigator reported, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg supported Ukraine's position, which demands that Russia release the participants in the provocation - an attempt to break through the Russian border near the Kerch Strait at the end of 2018 - 24 crew members of three Ukrainian Navy ships.

At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry explained why Ukraine has no chance in a maritime tribunal.
