“Ukraine receives money not for transit as such, but depending on the volume of pumping. It is possible to conclude a transit agreement for at least two hundred years. The question is how it will be spelled out. If mandatory volumes of gas pumping are not agreed upon there or a bunch of conditions are agreed upon in connection with which these volumes will be radically reduced, then, in general, this contract will turn into a dummy.

I do not rule out that a compromise can be found with Zelensky - not for a year, for three or four, until the end of the presidential term, but to lay down conditions within that will actually devalue this agreement.

Even if it is concluded for three or four years, it may mean something for Zelensky personally, but it does not mean anything for the fate of transit through Ukraine.

This still means the death of transit through Ukraine, because if the principled position of the authorities there does not change, then transit through Ukraine will still look unreliable,” the expert explained.

“By the way, Zelensky’s demand to conclude a ten-year contract, it seems to me, betrays Zelensky’s hidden desire to be re-elected for another term. Why exactly ten years? That's exactly two terms. And then, if something happens, he leaves a lot of problems for his replacement.

I do not rule out that ten years in itself is just a little more than two terms. This, it seems to me, reveals Zelensky’s desire to still think about a second term,” Mikheev concluded.
