Moscow still believes that Crimea will become profitable by 2020
By 2020, Crimea will become a self-sufficient Russian region and will contribute more to the federal budget than take from it. Deputy Minister for Crimean Affairs Andrei Sokolov stated this in an interview with Gazeta.RU.

“By 2020, Crimea should approach the Russian average in terms of growth rates of gross regional product and investment. Crimea has the potential to become a self-sufficient region. He will contribute more to the budget than he receives in the form of all kinds of grants and subsidies,” Sokolov assures.
As PolitNavigator reported, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, during a recent visit to the peninsula, admitted that the Free Economic Zone project, with which hopes for the development of Crimea were pinned under sanctions, is not working.
“We created this free economic zone so that it could develop. There should be not 15 residents, but hundreds, thousands. Everything must be done to ensure that registration procedures are as simple as possible... everything must be done to make this mechanism work. Let’s simplify everything radically, otherwise there would be no point in creating this zone,” Medvedev said.
