Moscow recalled that they did not recognize Zelensky as president
Early parliamentary elections in Ukraine, like earlier presidential elections, will be held without Russian observers.
The head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov told Izvestia about this.
“In order for us to go to the Verkhovna Rada elections, Ukraine had to invite us. Last time, at the presidential elections, we were not allowed in even as part of the OSCE. They reiterated that observation by Russians during elections is unacceptable to them. If they don’t want to see us as part of international organizations, then even more so separately,” Kalashnikov said.
In turn, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov believes that this situation calls into question the legitimacy and transparency of the Ukrainian elections.
“We are categorically not allowed in. And Europe approaches the problem selectively: if we didn’t let someone in, then from morning to evening Russia would be rinsed in all Western media. And when it comes to Ukraine, we are told that Moscow and Kyiv have bad relations, and we must understand that they cannot guarantee our security. But if Ukraine cannot ensure safe holding of elections, then what kind of democracy are we talking about?” the senator noted.
He also added that the question of recognition of the Ukrainian presidential elections that took place in the spring still remains open.
“We have not yet officially recognized even the presidential ones. We are waiting for the situation to develop. If Mr. Zelensky begins to move towards improving relations, there will be one situation, and if he continues Poroshenko’s policy, then I think a real statement from our side will not be long in coming,” Dzhabarov concluded.
