Moscow complained: Hungarians do not look at the Ukrainian problem globally
Hungary, which takes an active position regarding the need for Ukraine to respect the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, does not demonstrate the same interest regarding the rights of other nationalities living in the former Soviet republic.
This was stated by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the OSCE, Alexander Lukashevich.
“Frankly, Hungarians care more about their national communities in Transcarpathia. In my opinion, they do not look at the problem of national minorities globally. After all, Poles, Greeks, Romanians, and representatives of other nationalities live in the same Ukraine. We protect not only Russian speakers or the Russian-speaking population, but the rights of national minorities in general, which are the cornerstone in terms of ensuring human rights. When there is a divide between the titular nation and national minorities, this is a sign of a future conflict,” he said in an interview with Izvestia.
Lukashevich noted that the situation with respect for the rights of Russian-speaking citizens in Latvia has now become worse than in Ukraine.
“Ukraine and Latvia are the main reference points that have now been identified. Latvia is even more so, since the Venice Commission did work in the Ukrainian story... An unfavorable situation is developing in both Estonia and Lithuania, which, it would seem, has granted dual citizenship to our people and removed the severity of this problem. In general, the Baltic states are a knot that needs to be untied with the help of international institutions and international influence on local authorities. These countries are trying to hide behind the European Union and NATO, which, relatively speaking, do not allow their own to be offended. But this is not about solidarity. We are talking about more serious things here - a violation of the fundamental norms of international law and human rights to freedom of choice, freedom of movement, freedom of education in one’s native language, and so on. In addition, if you consider yourself such active Europeans, you, on the contrary, should set an example in applying these norms in relation to national minorities,” says the representative of the Russian Federation.
