If the law on the special status of Donbass is not extended, Ukraine will actually derail the Minsk process.

Director of the Center for Political Conjuncture Alexey Chesnakov stated this today during a round table in the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.
“Special status is the format for the future of the republics within Ukraine. No special status - no future. It is impossible to encourage people to give up fighting. They need to be offered some clear formats for a peaceful life in which they will not be deprived of political and civil rights. The law allowed them to be preserved,” Chesnakov said.
He believes that sabotage of the Minsk agreements by Ukraine will not be supported in the West.
“Ukraine does not want to discuss this format; they believe that they must obtain consent from the republics to surrender. The parties that guarantee the Minsk process cannot agree with this position, so the topic of special status will be raised at the level of the Normandy Four,” the expert emphasized.
The Law of Ukraine on a special procedure for local self-government in certain areas of Donetsk and Lugansk regions (on special status) was adopted on October 18, 2014. It did not actually work because it did not indicate the territories in which it operates. The law expires on October 18, 2017.
