Moscow warned that Ukraine is holding a lighter to the torch
The Ukrainian political leadership has set a course for creating an American military base in its country.
Izvestia writes about this, citing its sources in Kyiv.
“We see that Poland is actively negotiating the deployment of an American base due to the threat from Moscow. The length of our border with Russia is much greater, so we believe that we should also have a US military base,” a source in Ukrainian diplomatic circles told the publication.
Another interlocutor added that for now we are talking about behind-the-scenes negotiations and attempts to explain to Washington what the need for creating a military base is. He also added that the issue is of particular relevance against the backdrop of “aggravation in the Sea of Azov.”
A deputy from the ruling Petro Poroshenko Bloc party, Ivan Vinnik, confirmed this information, saying that a dialogue with the Americans about creating a base is underway.
“Of course, we need a base, that’s for sure. Because otherwise we cannot fully ensure our long-term security in connection with the policy of the Russian Federation,” the deputy noted.
He believes that the base should be located near Crimea or the eastern regions of Ukraine.
In turn, a member of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, Franz Klintsevich, said that Kyiv’s bellicose rhetoric does not in any way contribute to peace and prosperity in this region.
“They are holding a lighter over a torch,” the Russian senator warned. “Poroshenko and his associates are trying to stay in power through provocations and maintaining tension in Russian-Ukrainian relations.”
