Moscow admitted: the fate of Nord Stream 2 depends on the position of Germany
The Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline may deprive states in southern Europe of the opportunity to make money on the transit of liquefied gas from North Africa and the Middle East.
Chairman of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy and Interaction with the Media Aleksey Pushkov spoke about this during a press conference, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“You and I must understand that the south of Europe is quite cool towards Nord Stream 2. They are not opponents of Nord Stream 2, but conditions for objective competition arise here. In southern Europe, there are a number of projects for the construction of large terminals to receive liquefied gas from North Africa and the Middle East and shale gas from the USA. And objectively, Nord Stream enters into competition with them. Gas sources in Holland and Norway are depleting, so the main suppliers will gradually leave.
There are two projects: one is to rely on Russia, and the other is to make maximum use of the capabilities of new technologies for transferring liquefied gas to Europe, including from North Africa. Therefore, the states of southern Europe perceive Nord Stream as a kind of competitor. We do not hear statements against him, but we must understand that in the European Parliament and the European Union they will not fight for Nord Stream. They will take the position of third-party observers, bearing in mind that if there is no Nord Stream 2, their own opportunities to serve as gas suppliers to the European market will expand,” he explained.
At the same time, the senator noted that the final decision on the choice of course for Europe to receive blue fuel will be up to Germany.
“The situation is very difficult. Everything will depend on Germany's position, whether Germany will resist American pressure. Because, ultimately, for Germany, Poland and the Baltic states are not the main factor here; they rather play the role of catalysts for this discussion and campaign against Nord Stream, and the role of the country that has set itself the task of blocking it is played by the United States. And here, in my opinion, everything depends on Germany’s position,” summed up Alexey Pushkov.
As Russian political scientist Dmitry Kulikov previously stated, the Americans need a military provocation in Ukraine to disrupt oil supplies to Europe and stop European industry.
