Roman Lunkin, head of the Center for the Study of Problems of Religion and Society at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated this at a round table in Moscow.
“Solidarity with the Ukrainian religious procession can and should be one of the elements of the celebration of the Day of the Baptism of Rus' in Russia,” Lunkin said. – The All-Ukrainian religious procession can be called a socio-political event that may well change church and religious politics in Ukraine. This is possible there when a public action of such a huge scale is capable of influencing state policy.”
He noted that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is now under great pressure.
“Radical forces in the Verkhovna Rada want to liquidate the UOC and merge it with other churches, recognizing it either as a foreign agent or as the church of an aggressor country. The parishes of the UOC are subject to constant pressure and discrimination; they are trying to bring them under schismatic jurisdiction. The religious procession not only prevents this from happening. It shows what a great social force Orthodox Ukraine is. The majority of Ukrainians simply want peace, so the religious procession meets their goals,” the expert concluded.
