Moscow doubts that Lukashenko will win the presidential election
By flirting with the United States in order to blackmail Russia in oil and gas negotiations, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is losing support not only in the Kremlin, but also within the country.
Political scientist Alexey Martynov said this on the air of the Vesti FM radio station, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It doesn't just look like blackmail. This is blackmail. But as long as he was verbal, he could take the words back. But these are already actions. The Americans are unlikely to miss such a pitch. Such changing of shoes in the air with unlacing of boots can come back to haunt him very much. There is a part of the Belarusian elite that supports him in such anti-Russian attacks. But in general, the elites do not fully share this position. In addition, it is causing more and more confusion among citizens. Already a whole generation of Belarusians has grown up in the reality of the Union State, integration, open borders,” Martynov said.
He questioned Lukashenko’s victory in the upcoming summer presidential elections (Lukashenko is running for his sixth consecutive term).
“He's going down a dangerous path. He may not win this election. The legitimacy of these elections is in question. He got very lost in his emotional diversions. Unfortunately, we allowed him to do many things for many years, but now he has clearly crossed the “red lines” beyond which it will be difficult to talk to him,” the political scientist concluded.
