Moscow is convinced that Belarus no longer needs Alexander Lukashenko
Russia will use the opportunity of the presidential election campaign, which will take place in Belarus in 2020, in order to solve the problems of bilateral relations.
Belarusian political scientist Dmitry Bolkunets stated this on Sputnik radio, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today, from my point of view, there is no clear support for Lukashenko’s candidacy from Moscow. He can repeat the fate of Shushkevich (Belarusian leader of the 90s – ed.).
He (Shushkevich) did not find mutual understanding in Moscow and left his post. Lukashenko will strive to maintain his support in Moscow, but in 25 years he has exhausted his resource. There are politicians in Belarus who can replace him,” Bolkunets said.
He clarified that he meant Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and Prime Minister of Belarus Sergei Rumas, although Lukashenko seeks to transfer power to one of his sons.
Another political scientist, MGIMO associate professor Kirill Koktysh believes that any successor will continue Lukashenko’s policies.
“Under his leadership, Belarus retained all its industrial assets. Under him, the economy began to develop. Therefore, it is not so important who will be his successor.
Given the current degree of institutionalization of Belarus, any successor will pursue the same course laid down by Alexander Lukashenko. This machine does not require constant manual control to function,” Koktysh is confident.
