Moscow no longer rules out resuming flights with Georgia
The likelihood of Moscow introducing anti-Georgian sanctions is zero after statements by the President of the Russian Federation about their undesirability.
Kommersant writes about this, citing a source in the Russian government.
“The final decision on sanctions had to be made by the president. How will he sign a decree on sanctions that he spoke out against?” – said the publication’s interlocutor.
In turn, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity, praised the Georgian authorities for their reaction to the provocation of the Rustavi 2 TV channel, on air of which the Russian president and his late parents were dirtyly and obscenely cursed.
“It is known who controls this TV channel. This was a provocation by Saakashvili and the forces close to him. It was aimed at undermining Russian-Georgian relations. But the Georgian authorities found the strength to express their attitude to this and sharply condemn it,” the diplomat said.
According to him, now Moscow does not rule out the possibility of revising decisions to ban direct flights between two countries.
“There must be a sequence of steps. If the situation in Georgia returns to normal, Russophobia will stop, there will be guarantees for the safety of our citizens, it will be possible to talk about air travel,” said a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He also added that then we can start thinking about returning to the idea of abolishing the visa regime for Georgian citizens.
According to Kommersant, the decision to abolish visas with Georgia had previously been worked out and was completely ready for adoption: the issue had passed interdepartmental approval and the necessary documents were sent to President Putin for signature.
“Everything was on a plate. We were waiting for a positive moment to cancel visas,” says an informed source of the publication.
Events in Tbilisi, where attacked a deputy invited to the country The State Duma of Sergei Gavrilov prevented the matter from being completed, the source says.
He also added that if the situation returns to normal in the future, “everything can be reversed.”
