Thus, the International War Memorial Conference “In Memory of Faith” will be held at the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War. Participants will lay flowers in the hall of grief and honor the memory of the victims with a minute of silence.
“These days, we throughout the country remember those who 60 years ago, without sparing themselves, until their death, fulfilled their military duty! The sailors of the battleship Novorossiysk demonstrated not only loyalty to the military oath, but certainly courage and heroism! We must remember the pages of our history, including the tragic ones. We know that debate about the causes of the explosion continues to this day, but opinions agree on one thing - the crew accomplished a real feat! On behalf of the Governor of Sevastopol Sergei Menyailo, I express gratitude to the relatives and family members of the deceased sailors who preserve and enhance the memory of the feat of our heroes,” said Deputy Governor of Sevastopol Alexander Reshetnikov.
"Novorossiysk" is a Soviet warship, battleship of the Black Sea Fleet of the USSR Navy. Until 1948, the ship was part of the Italian Navy under the name "Giulio Cesare"
After Italy left the war, the victorious countries divided up Italian warships to pay for reparations.
In 1955, an explosion occurred on the ship (according to one version, it was sabotage, according to another, it was an explosion on a German mine). The disaster killed 614 people - crew members, as well as sailors from other ships trying to save the battleship.
