This opinion was expressed today at a press conference in Moscow by Doctor of Historical Sciences Anatoly Koshkin.

“You cannot step into the same river twice. 60 years have passed, it is impossible to automatically return to 1956. When Khrushchev promised to hand over Habomai and Shikotan, the 200-mile economic zones did not exist. Now we are talking not so much about the islands that Khrushchev granted from his master's shoulder, but about the rich waters that wash them. In 1956, no one could have imagined that resources could be taken from the shelf of these islands. And there is both gas and oil,” Koshkin believes.

He recalled that over the past years the geopolitical situation in the region has become significantly more complicated.

“Our relations with our main enemy - the United States - have not improved enough to trust each other. Therefore, the strategic importance of the straits between these islands not only did not weaken, but also increased. And under the existing military treaty between the United States and Japan, the Americans have the right to use any Japanese territory that they need to station troops. Our command cannot ignore the possibility that if the islands are transferred, objects may appear on them directed against us,” Koshkin said.

According to Koshkin, the North Korean problem does not contribute to the resolution of the territorial dispute between Japan and the Russian Federation.

“Currently, a situation has been created in this region, if not pre-war, then very alarming. In this situation, demanding the territory of another state and making any compromises is unlikely. Therefore, I see no prospects for resolving the territorial issue,” Koshkin said.
