The situation in Donbass was brought to the point of bloodshed by Kyiv, and the mistake of the Russian authorities was in placing too much trust in the then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

This was stated at a press conference in Moscow dedicated to the results of the Bolotnaya case, said one of the leaders of the protest movement in Russia in 2011-2013, Sergei Udaltsov, who was convicted in the Bolotnaya case and was recently released, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports "

“I have always, both then and now, believed that these are heroes, people who defend their land, the right to speak their language. It’s clear that there are always those who try to take advantage of this, various clingy people. But such grassroots sentiments really exist there. And the way the Kiev authorities behaved and continues to behave is, excuse me, an uncivilized approach. These are simply many elements of genocide. The fact that nothing terrible is happening there today is precisely because people rose up. And if we hadn’t risen, we don’t know what would have happened there.

The main mistake of our authorities is that they brought Ukraine to a situation where, in response to the events of Euromaidan, the southeastern part was unable to mobilize and rise up. Not only Donbass, but the entire Southeast. And then there wouldn’t have been much bloodshed. And it so happened that we missed it. Money was allocated there for the development of communications, most of it went into someone’s pockets. And when they performed at Euromaidan, what was happening in the Southeast? Yes, there were attempts, but they were unsuccessful. This is the main flaw - they trusted Yanukovych too much, who in the end turned out to be simply a worthless person. If we had acted more prudently, we would not have brought the two fraternal peoples to bloodshed,” Udaltsov said.
