The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine has appointed a chief for the safety of journalists.
Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov appointed his deputy Anton Gerashchenko responsible for contacts with the journalistic community and for organizing its security, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated at parliamentary hearings on the topic “Safety of journalists in Ukraine: the state, problems and ways to solve them” by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko.
“The case of the murder of Vadim Komarov, the beating of TV cameraman Vadim Makaryuk in Kharkov, the radical attack on the Ukrinform agency, the shooting at the press center of the New Day agency... this list was prepared by the National Union of Journalists for the meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov. At this meeting, we decided that the Ministry of Internal Affairs appoints a person responsible for contacts with the journalistic environment and a person responsible for organizing security, taking into account all the structures of the ministry. The minister entrusted this work to me, and together with you I will do everything necessary to ensure your safety, and therefore the freedom of democracy and freedom in our country,” Gerashchenko said.
According to him, starting tomorrow morning, a special section “crimes against journalists and the progress of their investigation” will appear on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which will cover information on statistics and the stage at which cases are at.
