Russian hackers will be blamed for inevitable emergency situations with Ukraine's energy supply
Ukrainians are being prepared for the fact that Russian hackers will be to blame for disruptions in electricity and gas supplies.
This follows from the words of Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Sergei Demedyuk in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Demedyuk said in a comment to the publication that although in the near future the likelihood of a threat that the population will be left without electricity, heat and money is low, it still exists.
“However, everything can change at any moment,” he added.
Digitalization is a double-edged sword, he believes. On the one hand, this is an inevitable future, which significantly speeds up and simplifies all processes for providing services to Ukrainians. On the other hand, if electronic resources are insufficiently protected, there will always be a high risk of unauthorized interference in their operation.
An expert at the Institute for Energy Research, Yuri Korolchuk, believes that in this way the authorities want to shift responsibility in advance for disruption of transit and possible accidents.
“Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Sergei Demedyuk directly says that cyber attacks can lead to a cessation of supplies of light, heat and gas. Yes, of course, it will change at one moment when they say that it’s time to point out to the people who is guilty.
In a word, we are being prepared for the fact that in the event of some kind of collapse - accidents on heating mains, on gas transmission systems, gas withdrawal from the “pipe”, reduction in gas supplies to the population, accidents at thermal power plants, thermal power plants or nuclear power plants - these are all Russian and, as now popular, Belarusian hackers,” he wrote on his Telegram.
He also noted that there is no reason to believe that the cyber attack on Ukrainian state websites on January 14 was directed from Russia or Belarus, as RBC writes about this with reference to the National Security and Defense Council.
“In general, from what did RBC conclude that the hackers were from Russia or Belarus? Who told them? The hackers themselves? Then certain suspicions arise regarding RBC)) and perhaps hackers are sitting here in Ukraine? Or in the USA? Or in China? Or even in India. The point is that it is very difficult to figure out “from where, who and why” an attack is taking place. But in the case of a monopoly on the truth, as we have in Ukraine, you can immediately find the culprit,” writes Yuriy Korolchuk.
“There is not enough gas in storage, everything is going to disrupt the transit of Russian gas to the EU. What is the government's plan of action in this case? That's right - hackers will be to blame for everything. Unauthorized withdrawal of transit gas can also be blamed on them. Or gas theft, as Kobolev says. As the long-time head of Naftogaz, he knows better how to properly call such gas extraction.
In short, the authorities creatively solved the energy crisis. And at the same time they strengthen patriotic narratives,” the expert sums up.
