The German parliament categorically rejected the idea of Ukraine joining NATO
NATO should be a defensive alliance, not a policy of eastward expansion.
Jan Nolte, member of the Bundestag from the Alternative for Germany party, stated this in an interview with Izvestia, answering the question of how his political force views the future of German security policy.
“We are not against NATO, but we want it to be a peaceful alliance. We reject NATO's eastward expansion. Including the idea of joining Ukraine to the alliance. This is not about a defensive alliance. If NATO begins to cause unrest and discord in the world, then it itself is jeopardizing the issue of security. In addition, the AfD opposes the use of the alliance for other purposes than for the implementation of US geopolitical interests. The purpose of NATO is to protect NATO members and nothing more,” the politician said.
According to him, historically, Germans and Russians often supported each other.
“However, for some reason we listen to Washington, although we need to become independent. This is what the AfD stands for. In Germany we always talk a lot about the past, it is very important for our nation. And I believe that the lesson that we must learn from the past is to improve relations with Russia. We must work together in this direction,” Nolte concluded.
