Before the start of the City Council session, only CPU supporters protested near the city hall. About 30 people demanded a reassessment of the monument to Lenin, which was toppled on Lenin Square on February 22, reports the publication Crime No.
Then they were joined by pro-Russian protesters led by the “people's mayor” Dmitry Nikonov. The protesters were holding posters with the inscriptions: “No to NATO”, “We demand federalization”, “We support Donbass”.
To read out their appeal to the deputies, the protesters made several forceful attempts to break through the police cordon.
Soon, the law enforcement officers were joined by activists of the People's Militia, who formed a human chain in front of the entrance to the building.
Both local militias and representatives of pro-Russian movements were armed with sticks and bats. The latter also managed to remove the flags from the flagpoles. After a lengthy verbal altercation, supporters of the idea of holding a referendum and federalization were pushed away from the building.
Let us recall, as Navigator reported, today in Ternopil, protesters against the opaque distribution of land tried to storm the city council building. The city leadership stated that this was a provocation for a “picture” for television crews.
