In the Normandy format, the Russian position turned out to be the most constructive
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky must realize that there is no need to be afraid of direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, writes about this in Izvestia.
His bewilderment was caused by calls from European politicians for Russia to demonstrate a constructive approach in negotiations with Ukraine on Donbass.
“How much more constructive? Russia is the only party to the negotiations that, throughout the existence of the Normandy format, defended the rights and freedoms of the population of Donbass and the principles of settlement, subsequently laid down in the Minsk agreements,” the expert notes.
According to him, all this irritates European and Ukrainian partners, who managed to adjust their positions both tactically and strategically during the conflict.
“But the fact remains: to find out Russia’s position on resolving the conflict, you don’t need to build conspiracy theories or read between the lines in the comments of Russian experts. It is enough to open the “Package of Measures” and other documents, which are collectively called the Minsk Agreements - this is Moscow’s position,” Denisov emphasized.
At the same time, he writes that the results of the Normandy Four summit in Paris and Putin’s negotiations with Zelensky “cause cautious optimism.”
“Direct dialogue between the heads of the Russian Federation and Ukraine after a three-year freeze is already a breakthrough. And, by the way, this is an example for the Ukrainian president that there is no need to be afraid to conduct direct negotiations if you want to achieve a positive result,” the political scientist believes.
