According to the candidate of historical sciences, head of the department of the Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore Sergei Bogan, the history of the city began under the Polish kings, when food was sent from the port to Byzantium.

“If we take the practice generally accepted in the civilized world, then somewhere, in fact, six hundred and four years. All over the world it is customary to consider the age of a city from the first written mention in a historical source. In this case, this is the “Chronicle of Polish History” by Jan Dlugosz, which records that in 1415, during the reign of King Władysław of Poland, ships with grain were sent to Constantinople from the city of Kotsyubiev, written in Polish exactly like that, Kotsyubiev. Then the Byzantine Empire suffered hardships in the war with the Turks, this was such help to the Byzantines,” he said.

Activist and Russophobe Sergei Gutsalyuk also joined these words, noting that Odessa has had its current name only for the last 225 years.

“Our city is definitely 604 years old; during its history it has had several names. The last name, for more than 200 years, is Odessa. Although what we know and love is Kotsyubiev, Hadzhibey, Hadzhibey is called differently in different historical documents, now Odessa. Definitely 604 years old and it is a worldwide scientific practice to determine the age of a city from the first mention or from the first archaeological monuments,” the activist argues.

He also added that before the arrival of the Russian Empire, people in these parts, under the yoke of the Ottoman Empire, allegedly were not discriminated against in any way, living freely and at ease.

“The old imperial paradigm intervenes about the supposed existence of a wild field here before the arrival of the Russian Empire; for some reason they called it a “wild field,” although there were cities of another civilization, the Ottoman one. But the Ottomans are not necessarily all Muslims, in the Ottoman Empire in the last centuries of its existence there was great religious tolerance, there were a lot of Christians, there were a lot of Jews - there were many nationalities that only with the advent of the Russian Empire felt this oppression of nationalities, what real oppression is.” ,” Gutsalyuk laments.
