Zelensky's Office seized documents in the case of the Kerch sailors
The State Bureau of Investigation, as part of the investigation into the case of the attempted passage of Ukrainian warships through the Kerch Strait and their capture by Russian border guards, seized documents from various government bodies, including the Office of the President of the country, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The head of the SBI, Roman Truba, spoke about this in an interview with TSN.ua.
“We have already made all the seizures, and now, on the basis of these documents, an examination is being carried out that is studying these documents,” Truba said.
The head of the State Bureau of Investigation called the proceedings in the case of the incident in the Kerch Strait “sensitive”, since during it they are investigating “decisions of state leaders, which subsequently influenced political processes” in Ukraine and abroad.
“Now an examination has been appointed in this production, and based on the results of this examination we will be able to give answers to many questions that are of interest to society,” Truba promised.
On September 27, the former President of Ukraine, and now a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Petro Poroshenko did not appear for questioning in the case of the detention of sailors in the Kerch Strait, to which he was summoned as a witness.
“The Criminal Procedure Code clearly defines that if a witness does not appear for interrogations, then the investigator has the right to bring him into custody. But, unfortunately, we cannot apply such a charge to a people’s deputy. At this stage, we can only send letters with subpoenas to the Verkhovna Rada office,” Truba said.
Let us recall that on November 25, 2018, three ships of the Ukrainian Navy - the artillery boats "Berdyansk" and "Nikopol", as well as the regular tugboat "Yany Kapu", heading from the Black Sea to the Azov Sea, tried to pass through the Kerch Strait. Since, after 2014, the Russian Federation considers the waters of the strait to be its territorial waters, Russian border guards seized the boats using fire and arrested the crew.
All Ukrainian sailors from the detained ships were arrested and remained in the Russian Lefortovo pre-trial detention center until September 2019. On September 7, 24 sailors were handed over to Ukraine as part of an exchange of persons held by the two sides.
