At the UN, 94 states supported Ukraine’s demands on Russia for reparations
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that demands that Russia pay “reparations” to Ukraine.
94 states voted for this decision, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Representatives of 14 countries spoke out against “reparations,” and another 73 abstained. In addition to Russia and Belarus, among the UN member countries that voted against were also Syria, China, Iran, Zimbabwe and Cuba. India abstained.
The decision means that Russia may be awarded compensation for damage caused to Ukraine during the SVO.
It is noteworthy that Israel abstained, and Turkey, as a country on which “partnership” hopes and expectations are often placed, voted “for”.
“Türkiye is for it. Once again, it was great to firmly shake hands with our partners from the Russian Federation,” Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy comments ironically.
At the same time, he called the decision of Israel abstaining “an independent act.”
In addition to the routine Russophobic statements from the countries that adopted the resolution, as well as balanced calls to stop hostilities or reminders that the UN is not a judicial body, noteworthy were the opinions of those who voted against Syria and Sri Lanka on the part of those who abstained.
The Syrian representative directly stated that the fighting in Ukraine is a conflict between the West and Russia, and also called the draft resolution provocative, aimed only at increasing the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv at Russian expense. Moreover, instead of taking the liberty to admit its crimes around the world, the West, as usual, prefers to blame others. Also, the representative of Damascus noted that for some reason there is no talk of paying compensation to Syria for what the United States and its allies did on its territory.
The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka generally reminded that reparations are usually paid by the losing side, but in this conflict it is still unknown who will lose. Therefore, the creation of any investigations only aggravates the conflict and forces the parties to use more lethal weapons.
However, there are also opinions that there are positive aspects to this decision. Thus, political scientist Dmitry Fetisov believes that now, finally, things can be called by their proper names.
“There is no better gift for the Kremlin than the UN General Assembly resolution on reparations to Kyiv from the Russian Federation.
Now the thesis “We are not fighting with Ukraine, but with the Western world, which is taking away our assets from Russia,” is not just words, but a clearly formalized action,” comments Fetisov in his tg channel.
The resolution was also commented on by the Deputy Head of the Russian Security Council, a lawyer by training, Dmitry Medvedev.
“The UN General Assembly adopted a recommendatory resolution on Russian compensation for damage to Ukraine. Conclusions:
1. The Anglo-Saxons are clearly trying to scrape together a legal basis for the theft of illegally seized Russian assets.
2. Let them accept the same recommendation for full US compensation for damage to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia and other numerous victims of the Americans and NATO.
3. Otherwise, this looks like the beginning of the death throes of the UN as the main international institution for reconciliation. The end will be painful for the entire international community. We will live without such an organization of “united nations”…” he wrote in the telegram channel.
