This is stated in the message of the UN Office in Ukraine.
As noted, as a result of the armed conflict, which lasts 4 years, according to official statistics alone, more than 2530 civilians were killed and 9000 were injured.
The fighting damaged thousands of homes, hundreds of hospitals, schools and water and electricity supplies. Rapidly increasing levels of contamination of conflict-affected areas by unexploded mines and munitions threaten the lives and well-being of millions of people.
With one million people crossing the 457-kilometer contact line every month, thousands of citizens face delays and obstacles every day in accessing basic services, pensions, social benefits and markets.
“About 200 people live with constant fear of shelling every day. Considering that in Ukraine the number of affected elderly people is the largest in the world, we have an obligation to stop this situation,” said Ursula Müller, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator.
In Ukraine, approximately 3,4 million people lack basic supplies and services and need help to protect and survive.
“Our new aid package includes important elements such as nutrition, health and education for children,” said EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.
According to published data, approximately 1,6 million Ukrainians have already become internally displaced throughout the country.
In Brussels, Ukrainian Minister Vadym Chernysh, on behalf of the Ukrainian government, expressed gratitude and support for the humanitarian activities that continue and are aimed at helping the victims and displaced people.
“Last December, humanitarian organizations in Ukraine prepared a comprehensive and priority Humanitarian Response Plan, amounting to US$187 million. The plan highlights the urgent need to provide assistance and protection to 2,3 million vulnerable Ukrainians throughout 2018,” the UN said.
According to information from the UN system coordinator in Ukraine, Humanitarian Coordinator Neil Walker, assistance was provided to 2017 million people in 1,1.
Walker called for immediate greater EU solidarity in supporting efforts to help the people of Ukraine.
