The UN complains that it cannot prove Russia’s involvement in the conflict in Donbass
UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Shimonovich said that there is growing evidence of Russia's involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, reports RBC with reference to Reuters. The official stressed that these testimonies cannot be supported by convincing evidence.

“We are talking about an increasing influx of fighters and growing evidence that some military personnel are also participating in the fighting,” he told a news conference in Geneva.
Shimonovich also touched upon the situation of the “GRU fighters” arrested in Ukraine. According to him, they are “between a rock and a hard place” because they consider themselves prisoners of war, and Russian authorities said that those arrested ended up in Ukraine after being discharged from the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces. On May 21, UN representatives interviewed two Russians in a Kiev hospital. “It is very difficult to prove whether they are military personnel or not. That is why we mainly talk about “fighters of the Russian Federation,” said Armen Harutyunyan, head of the UN human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine.
