In 2021, 79 cases of exceeding hygienic standards for the content of residual quantities of pesticides and agrochemicals were detected.

Rosselkhoznadzor held negotiations with the General Directorate of Food and Control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey and asked to take measures to strengthen control and ensure the phytosanitary safety of products intended for export to the Russian Federation.

In addition, Russia intends to study Turkish legislation in the field of GMOs.

Türkiye has not publicly recognized the holding of Russian parliamentary elections in Crimea. In addition, the president of this country, Recep Erdogan, said at the UN General Assembly that Turkey does not recognize the “annexation” of Crimea.

Last December, Russia banned the import of tomatoes and peppers from the Turkish provinces of Antalya and Izmir, after which it warned that restrictive measures could be expanded. The sanctions coincided with the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, in which Turkey took an active part.

Previously, a ban on the import of Turkish tomatoes was introduced on January 1, 2016 in response to the actions of Turkey, whose military aircraft shot down a Russian Su-24 aircraft in the skies over Syria. Rosselkhoz supervision lifted the restrictions in 2018 after negotiations between Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“As soon as Erdogan became rude at the UN on the Crimean issue, Russia’s most effective department, agricultural surveillance, came into play. It is high time to introduce a “tomato index” in Russian-Turkish relations. Russia and Türkiye look at each other as if in a mirror. Economic interests dictate the need for regional cooperation, so Moscow constantly reminds Ankara where its interests lie. Sooner or later the parties will come to an agreement on dividing spheres of influence in the CIS, the Black Sea and the Middle East. Is agricultural diplomacy effective? It may not be effective. Do not have another one. This at least may be useful to domestic manufacturers. If it is systemic,” political scientist Semyon Uralov commented on the Rosselkhoznadzor statement in his Telegram channel.

HSE professor Dmitry Evstafiev hints that a ban on the import of tomatoes will not be enough.

“What about tangerines and cucumbers? I personally saw viruses there with my own eyes. Take my word for it,” he says ironically.

The next meeting between Putin and Erdogan is scheduled to take place on September 29 in Sochi.
