In response to the water blockade of Crimea, Ukraine may be left without the Desna
In response to the water blockade of Crimea by Ukraine, Russia may block the Desna River on its territory.
Vice Prime Minister of Crimea, representative of the republic to the President of the Russian Federation Georgy Muradov spoke about this at the IMHO Club site, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Muradov, the water blockade of Crimea dealt a serious blow to the peninsula’s agriculture, so Russia reserves the possibility of responding.
“Ukraine, with the connivance of the West, applied such brutal sanctions as depriving people of fresh water, despite the proposal of the Crimean government to pay large financial resources for water. But no - Ukraine blocked its part of the canal, and our agricultural crops in the north of the peninsula were destroyed.
As a result, the residents of the republic suffered colossal losses: some agricultural enterprises were liquidated, and the peninsula’s reservoirs began to regularly dry up. This led to a shortage of water, 85% of which came to the peninsula from the Russian Dnieper River and its tributaries flowing through Ukraine. In response, we could block, for example, the Desna on Russian territory, but we are not doing this yet,” Muradov said.
Previously, hydrologist and correspondent of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Danilov-Danilyan, said that Russia has everything technical capabilities to respond to the water blockade of Crimea and block the sources of the Dnieper River and transfer its waters bypassing Ukraine.
