“In Paris, Putin can receive special status for Donbass and the lifting of sanctions”
Previously, Germany supported Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko without forcing him to compromise on Donbass.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv online publication “Apostrophe” by German political scientist, professor at the University of Bonn Andreas Heinemann-Gruder, answering a question about the position of Germany and France on the eve of the Normandy Four summit.
“I believe that Germany previously defended the interests of Ukraine and supported Petro Poroshenko. They did not force Poroshenko to make any compromises; they said that Russia is the aggressor. Now Poroshenko is no more. That’s why they don’t know what Zelensky’s “red lines” are. I think that Berlin is now ready to overcome the current status quo, and if Zelensky is ready for appropriate compromises, then they will be ready for them too,” says the expert.
“As for Macron, I see the risk that he is only engaged in symbolic politics. I don’t know what his principled positions are. He often starts something, engages in some kind of rhetoric, but there is no clear position behind it. And it's dangerous. Most often, Macron is engaged in window dressing, and it is not entirely clear what he wants to achieve now. Therefore, Putin can receive special status for Donbass and also the lifting of sanctions, but the Ukrainian side will receive very little,” Heinemann-Gruder fears.
