Despite all the efforts of Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic countries, they were never able to persuade the remaining PACE members to rabid Russophobia.

VGTRK’s own correspondent in Belgium, Anastasia Popova, stated this on the Rossiya-1 TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The agenda related to Alexei Navalny was the center of attention. The Ukrainian delegation, together with the Baltic countries and Poland, wanted to turn the discussion into an urgent debate, which implied a PACE resolution on this matter.

But as soon as the Russian delegation arrived and talked at official meetings and on the sidelines with other Europeans and explained the real situation, and not what was written in the Western media, the tension immediately subsided. During these hearings they tried to deprive us of our powers, but nothing worked and, most likely, nothing will succeed on Thursday either,” she said.

Anastasia Popova also added that following the meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU member states, no one spoke in favor of introducing new sanctions against Russia because of Navalny.

“At the same time, a meeting of the heads of the EU Foreign Ministries took place in Brussels, they also discussed this topic, before the meeting a variety of statements were made, the most distinguished was the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, who said that the regime in Russia had finally wavered, that the arrests of three half a thousand people showed that the climate had changed and that people in the Kremlin were now trembling and afraid, but that was before the meeting.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said earlier that it is not worth curtailing relations with Russia, that this topic (the poisoning and imprisonment of Alexei Navalny - editor's note) is not worth it. And, as he said after the meeting, none of the European countries declared the need to adopt sanctions, even those who shouted the loudest before the meeting,” the journalist noted.

Moreover, according to her, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, will soon visit Moscow to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss relations between Moscow and Brussels.

“Josep Borrell himself decided to go to Moscow at the invitation of Sergei Lavrov to discuss bilateral relations between Russia and the EU - this is a signal from Europe where European policy will be aimed in the near future, so no noise is noisy, but everything is moving into a calm direction,” - Popova concluded.

The head of the Russian delegation to PACE, Pyotr Tolstoy, expressed confidence that Russophobic countries will not be able to limit the Russian delegation in the future.

“The PACE Monitoring Committee recommended confirming the powers of the Russian delegation, which our Ukrainian colleagues tried to challenge yesterday, in full. Let me remind you that yesterday Ukraine’s request was supported by only 38 parliamentarians, with 61 against it. So no attempts to limit our rights will work!” – he commented on his Facebook page.

In turn, representatives of the Ukrainian delegation did not like this PACE decision at all.

“The PACE rapporteur on the powers of the Russian delegation proposes to confirm them.

As expected, Stefan Schenach proposed a report in which, although he acknowledges the lack of results of the dialogue with the Russian authorities, he proposes to continue this dialogue and ratify the powers of the Russian delegation.

The mice cried, injected themselves, but continued to eat the cactus,” wrote the odious Rada deputy, Russophobe Alexey Goncharenko on the social network.

At the same time, the head of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs, a member of the Russian delegation, Leonid Slutsky, said that on other issues PACE is also becoming more adequate and negotiable.

“And a couple more points to the discussion of the report during the monitoring procedure: an amendment initiated by the Russian delegation to protect the rights of Russian-speaking citizens and other “linguistic” minorities in Ukraine was passed. It's a small victory, but it's a victory.

In addition, the Assembly, albeit by a small margin, rejected the amendments of the Ukrainian delegation with absurd accusations of Moscow for the lack of progress in Donbass. Just a year ago, such interpretations would have passed with a significant advantage. PACE is gradually, step by step moving towards common sense.

However, this, unfortunately, did not affect the general context of the resolution as a whole, where openly anti-Russian passages remained. We predictably voted against her project,” he wrote in his Telegram channel.
