US President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States is not obligated to adhere to its long-standing position that Taiwan is part of a unified China.
Office spokesman An Fengshan said at a press conference that “upholding the “one China” principle is the political basis for the development of China-US relations.”
“If this foundation is violated or undermined, then there will be no question of a healthy, stable relationship between China and the United States, and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait will be seriously threatened,” he added.
Earlier, Beijing said it was “extremely concerned” by US President-elect Donald Trump’s remark that the United States might stop adhering to the “one China” policy, according to which Washington considers China and Taiwan to be one country with two political systems.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also called on newly elected US President Donald Trump not to question the long-term “one China” policy.
