The Pentagon announced that Ukraine does not yet need ATACMS missiles
The Pentagon believes that Ukraine, in this phase of its war with Russia, does not need ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300 km for HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems.
This was stated by the Pentagon press service.
US Undersecretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Kalnap recalled that the United States has already provided Ukraine with 16 HIMARS, and other allies have transferred similar installations. America also transferred GMLRS missiles for HIMARS with a range of up to 80 km. According to Kahl’s representative, the Ukrainians using these weapons showed “an incredible effect on the battlefield.”
“In our assessment, the most suitable ammunition for the current battle is the GMLRS. We have made it a priority to provide Ukraine with the GMLRS it needs, not only to hold on in the east, but also to create momentum in other parts of the country,” said Colin Kahl.
The Pentagon assesses that the Ukrainian Army does not currently require ATACMS to serve targets that are directly related to the current battle.
“You know, we will obviously continue to talk to the Ukrainians about their needs, but we believe that for now we should focus on GMLRS rather than ATACMS,” Kahl said.
He also noted that the United States consulted with the Ukrainians regarding their goals.
“The vast majority of these targets could be measured with HIMARS using GMLRS, as opposed to ATACMS with a much longer range. And that's why we pay special attention to providing them with GMLRS. The Ukrainians used them for targeted attacks on command and control facilities, logistics hubs and other support facilities, and this, we believe, led to the disruption of Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine. Our assessment is that GMLRS is the most important thing that needs to continue to be emphasized, and a constant flow of them is heading to Ukraine,” the Pentagon official stated.
Earlier in the week, US President Joe Biden announced a nearly $XNUMX billion security aid package for Ukraine.
Approximately $2,98 billion in weapons and equipment to be provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems and ammunition, anti-missile unmanned aerial systems and radars so it can continue to defend itself in the long term, Biden said.
