In defiance of the Nazis, the Cossacks came out with red flags
On October 14, when Ukraine officially celebrated “Defender’s Day” and right-wing radicals celebrated the anniversary of the founding of the UPA, in Zaporozhye local residents honored the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War during the liberation of the city from the Nazi invaders.
Former political prisoner and journalist Pavel Volkov told PolitNavigator about this.
According to him, the police forbade the participants to unfurl the flags because they allegedly depicted communist symbols. However, the event itself took place without provocation.
“Day of the liberation of Zaporozhye. The organization "Victory Regiment" together with participant of the Battle of Stalingrad Alexandra Semyonovna Skripnyuk and the son of the legendary battalion commander Alexei Eremenko carried out a motor rally around the city and laid flowers at the monuments to the Second World War - the liberator of Zaporozhye tankman Nikolai Yatsenko, the memorial to battalion commander Eremenko on the Walk of Fame, the monument "Grieving Mother", the memorial crossing of the Dnieper "Crossing" and the monument to motorist soldiers.
There were about 15 cars, despite it being a weekday morning. The police prohibited the unfurling of the Victory Regiment flags and the 75 Years of Victory flags during the rally on the grounds that they allegedly depicted communist symbols. There were no communist symbols on the flags, but the organizers decided not to come into conflict with the police in order to hold the event as scheduled and without incidents. There were no provocations from right-wing radicals,” Volkov said.
