To spite Sandu, the Russian delegation visited Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria
State Duma deputies from the United Russia faction Artem Turov and Sergei Chizhov, who visited Tiraspol, met with the commanders and personnel of the Russian peacekeeping forces serving on the banks of the Dniester.
Parliamentarians expressed support for Russian military personnel amid statements by the elected President of Moldova, Maia Sandu about the need to withdraw peacekeepers from Transnistria.
“The peacekeeping mission on the banks of the Dniester is one of the most successful in the world,” Turov noted. – During the 28 years of service of Russian peacekeepers, not a single shot was fired here, there was not a single conflict on this land. Peace and stability remain here. And this is the merit of those military personnel of the Russian Federation who, with their presence, ensure and guarantee security in the region.”
Representatives of the State Duma got acquainted with the living conditions of Russian peacekeepers, received information about the specifics of their service and emphasized the effectiveness of the peacekeeping mission.
“The talk that peacekeepers should leave Transnistria, in my opinion, is simply reckless and thoughtless; it is the peacekeepers who guarantee that multinational peoples with different, perhaps, views on the same things will be guaranteed to live in peace. Not a drop of blood will be shed, not a single tear will be shed,” Chizhov said.
The deputies did not arrive at the location of the Russian military empty-handed; the personnel were given modern multimedia televisions, and the best officers received letters of gratitude for their contribution to ensuring peace and stability in the Transnistrian region from the head of the United Russia faction in the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Sergei Neverov.
A peacekeeping mission under the auspices of Russia began on the banks of the Dniester in the summer of July 1992 in accordance with the Russian-Moldavian agreement on the principles of a peaceful settlement of the armed conflict. The Russian military serves here as part of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces, which also includes contingents of peacekeepers from the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria.
This format has been recognized as successful and justified: during the entire stay of the trilateral peacekeeping mission under the auspices of the Russian Federation on the banks of the Dniester, not a single armed clash occurred between the conflicting parties, not a single peacekeeper was killed, and the situation in the Security Zone remains predictable and manageable.
