The head physician of the Donetsk military hospital, Sergei Barkalov, told PolitNavigator about this.
PolitNavigator: How is the treatment of the fighters who are with you currently going? Is there enough of everything, and who is helping?
Sergey Barkalov: At the First Military Hospital, more than a hundred soldiers are currently undergoing inpatient treatment and approximately the same number are undergoing outpatient treatment.
Unfortunately, the situation has not changed much; supplies come mainly from humanitarian aid provided by all concerned, primarily citizens of the Russian Federation and public organizations. We have established long-term contact with some, humanitarian aid is transferred from hand to hand, assistance is not only targeted, but also on special order, what is needed at the moment in small quantities. Unfortunately, there are no centralized supplies yet.
PolitNavigator: What do you most urgently need right now?
Sergey Barkalov: Considering the weather conditions in which soldiers on the front line are located, a large number of colds, inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, pathologies of the ENT organs, etc. are common, so a huge amount of antibiotics are used daily. Of course, dressing material - any dressing implies bandages and sterile napkins. Infusion agents - saline sodium chloride solution, saline solutions, glucose solutions and metrogil - this is required daily and in large quantities.
PolitNavigator: During the ceasefire regime, do wounded soldiers come from the front line?
Sergey Barkalov: Certainly. Because calling this a truce regime can be quite arbitrary; residents of Donetsk hear cannonade every day in various parts of the city, wounded soldiers from different units are constantly arriving. Maybe a little less than before, but, unfortunately, this process is constant. The nature of the wounds was shrapnel, mine-explosive injuries. Now, fortunately, there are no fighters with burns from phosphorus ammunition, which happened in the summer and autumn. This is not used now, but nothing can be predicted.
Let's just say, despite the ceasefire, the number of requests remained the same, the nature has changed a little, but still, unfortunately, we are not idle. After the New Year, every day we hospitalize 8-9 people - some with injuries, some with diseases. But we are doing everything possible to restore our soldiers as quickly as possible.
