Events are developing quite funny in Poland, where the day before the authorities adopted a law restricting the broadcasting of TV channels whose owners are outside the European Union. The official reason is to prevent the entry of Russian and Chinese media, but in reality the new law hits the TVN channel, which sympathizes with the Polish opposition, which is part of the American media group Discovery.

The law, thanks to which Poland risks a quarrel with the United States, was passed with difficulty in parliament. The opposition accused the authorities of pushing through the decision and cited the Russian State Duma as an example. However, in reality, the situation resembles not so much the Russian parliament as the chaos in the Verkhovna Rada of neighboring Ukraine. Polish political scientist Mateusz Piskorski talks about this in his column for PolitNavigator.

The Polish parliament had to vote three times for the media law in the second reading. The ruling Law and Justice party had to resort to such tricks to collect the missing votes.

It is obvious to observers that in order to pass a law depriving the opposition mouthpiece of a license, the Seimas is once again practicing political corruption and bribery of deputies, and the voting results, contrary to the current regulations, are canceled, and people’s representatives are forced to vote again until they can collect a sufficient number of votes. This practice really turns Polish parliamentarism into a farce.

Every time this happens, the liberal opposition traditionally repeats the slogan that the PiS government was allegedly trying to introduce political practices typical of Russia. No one cares that this kind of rhetoric has nothing to do with reality, because in the State Duma such pushing of decisions ended in the 1990s.

But the opposition claims that the model for the political model being introduced by the leader of the ruling party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is Putin’s Russia. Of course, the absurdity of such logic is easy to prove. But it’s extremely funny that in Warsaw they don’t remember about another country where numerous illegal votes in order to push through the decisions the authorities needed became commonplace after 2014 - this, of course, is Ukraine and its Verkhovna Rada, which is increasingly degrading with each new convocation of deputies.

But it is not customary in Poland to criticize their Kyiv charges, but not a single opportunity is missed to attack Russia.

Publicist of the left-liberal portal Krytyka Polityczna (Political criticism) Piotr Wujcik argues that Polish society completely denies the political model of modern Russia. Poland has another role model - Germany. Wujcik believes that the Poles have long been defined civilizationally as an integral part of the West.

In politics this is expressed in party building. Kaczynski's previous party, Accord of the Center, was modeled on the German Christian Democracy. In economics, the Poles dream of catching up with Germany in terms of key development indicators. In culture, they mostly watch Western TV series and listen to Western music. Polish consumers prefer to buy Western, especially German-made goods – from washing powder to Volkswagen group cars. Wujcik is confident that this is the greatest guarantee of security and that Poland will remain in the so-called. West.

The preferences of the Poles, as well as their certain complex of low self-esteem compared to their German neighbors, is an indisputable fact. However, Wujcik forgets that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and even before, the entire Eastern European world looked to the West in search of a new quality of life. And the West used our naivety and its image capital in order to absorb new markets, creating, in essence, a neocolonial system.

And all these circumstances, plus many others, rather unite Poles with Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs, Belarusians and many others. The West and its approach to us is our common problem, which we will all have to cope with - together or separately.
