In Poland, three officials were detained on charges of gas lobbying in favor of Russia
The Polish Internal Security Agency detained three former board members of the EuRoPol GAZ company - Michal S., Zdislav J. and Miroslav D. (surnames are not given according to Polish law - Ed), PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The press service of the Polish Prosecutor General's Office informed about this today, writes the publication Rzeczpospolita.
It is reported that the detainees will be transferred to the disposal of the regional prosecutor's office in the city of Lodz, which is investigating the case of concluding gas agreements with the Russian Federation.
They are accused of causing large amounts of material damage to the company. According to the prosecutor's office, the joint damage caused by the activities of the detained company EuRoPol GAZ is estimated at 848 million zlotys (223 million US dollars at the current exchange rate). They face up to 10 years in prison.
The investigation by the Lodz prosecutor's office concerns the circumstances of the conclusion of an intergovernmental agreement on the supply of Russian gas to the republic, which is considered unprofitable in Poland and contrary to EU norms. Charges in this case have already been brought against former Deputy Minister of Economy Grazyna Gęclewska. The accused, according to investigators, introduced false information into government documentation about the positive assessment by a number of government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of plans to amend the agreement between Russia and Poland regarding gas transit.
During the investigation, the prosecutor found out that Michal S. and Miroslav D. brought to the signing on January 27, 2010 in Moscow, an agreement between EuRoPol GAZ, Gazprom Export and the Polish energy company PGNiG, which contained provisions unfavorable for EuRoPol GAZ. In particular, in this agreement, the Polish side undertook to refuse to support the claim against Gazprom Export, sent to the International Commercial Arbitration Court at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, which contained a demand for payment for gas transportation services through Poland in 2007.
EuRoPol GAZ is a joint venture of the Russian Gazprom and PGNiG, which owns the Polish section of the Yamal - Europe gas pipeline.
It became known earlier that Poland plans to sue Germany if it promotes Nord Stream 2.
