This was announced by the Russian Ambassador to Warsaw Sergei Andreev, who was quoted by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

“In 1997, the Polish Council for the Preservation of the Memory of Struggle and Martyrdom, together with the Russian Embassy in Poland, compiled a list of all monuments to the Red Army located in the republic outside military burial grounds and cemeteries. Then there were 561 of them. Now representatives of the Institute of National Remembrance say that there are 230 of them left,” said the diplomat.

At the same time, he clarified that according to the agreement signed in 1994, countries are obliged to keep records and take care of the safety of “all discovered places of memory and burial places” of victims of wars and repressions. But Warsaw interprets the agreement in its own way, saying that only monuments located in cemeteries are covered by the document, and all other monuments must be eliminated in accordance with a law recently adopted in Poland.

“This contradicts the text of the document and, from our point of view, is an incorrect and unfounded interpretation of the agreement,” the Russian ambassador emphasized.
