In an attempt to make peace with Germany, Biden reversed Trump's high-profile decision
Washington decided to cancel the withdrawal of American troops from Germany announced by the previous administration. Moreover, as US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said, it is planned to increase the contingent in Germany by 500 people.
At the same time, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, experts consider this decision an attempt to improve the state of American-German relations, which is being undertaken by US President Joe Biden.
“He sends signals to Berlin. In this regard, the Biden administration not only stopped the withdrawal of troops, but also significantly did the opposite. But this is a symbolic step designed to emphasize a change in the tone of relations between Washington and Berlin. The problems remain, but the tone has changed,” Dmitry Suslov, deputy director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics and an expert at the Valdai International Discussion Club, told Izvestia.
In turn, senior researcher at IMEMO RAS Sergei Kislitsyn believes that Washington’s decision to increase the American contingent by 500 people is nothing more than a beautiful step.
“The question is the qualitative composition of this contingent. The Biden administration is trying to tell allies that the United States is back with a renewed focus on responsible transatlantic security behavior. But other positions of the Biden administration, for example, on Nord Stream, are not much different from what Trump did. And they are in no hurry to remove trade duties. So far, the Biden administration is not seeking to give the green light to the European Union,” says Kislitsyn.
