The memory of General Lebed was honored in Pridnestrovie
The memory of General Alexander Lebed was honored in Pridnestrovie, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the local TV channel TSV.
Colleagues of the general and defenders of the republic came to the Memorial of Memory and Sorrow in Bendery to lay flowers at the bust of the general, who would have turned 69 years old.
“What Alexander Lebed did for Pridnestrovie should be remembered by everyone who lives on this land - he stopped the war and bloodshed on this land,” said the general’s colleague Andrei Essik.
On June 23, 1992, under the pseudonym “Colonel Gusev,” General Lebed arrived in Tiraspol on an inspection trip from the Russian Ministry of Defense, having expanded powers to suppress the development of the conflict. On June 27, 1992, he was appointed commander of the 14th Guards Combined Arms Army stationed in Transnistria
He gave the order to fire artillery at the Moldovan and Romanian troops attacking Tiraspol (more than 2 thousand died on their side). When making this decision, Lebed had to take responsibility: the high command at the very peak moment stopped communicating, withdrawing from the situation. As it turned out, Lebed’s actions marked the beginning of a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.
