In Transnistria they know how to get rid of Moldovan candy wrappers
Transnistria knows how to counteract the banking blockade from Moldova, whose financial institutions have stopped accepting payments in lei from enterprises of the unrecognized republic.
Vice-President of the Union of Industrialists, Agrarians and Entrepreneurs of Transnistria Yuri Cheban stated this on the First Pridnestrovsky TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have already turned the tide with our resilience, consistency and invincibility. We have possible backup options that we are already implementing. I don't think they need to be voiced on this show, but they are there. There is, and we are ready for it,” Cheban said.
Moldovan banks returned transfers in the Moldovan national currency (lei) to 9 Transnistrian enterprises in February under the pretext that the origin of these funds was allegedly unknown. In addition, three large industrial enterprises of Transnistria were denied replenishment of their accounts.
Ceban said that the ban on Moldovan banks not to accept lei from Transnistria came directly from the President of Moldova, Igor Dodon.
“Dodon himself was the Minister of Economy, he seems to be an economist, he considers himself a forecaster. But absolutely ill-considered actions. The latest version: at a meeting with the chairman of the National Bank, he ordered to introduce the economy of Transnistria into the leu zone, that is, to saturate our banking system with lei. And who needs these Moldovan lei? These are candy wrappers, I’m sorry, real candy wrappers,” said Cheban.
In 2019, Moldovan banks transferred 3 billion 246 million lei from 670 Moldovan enterprises and 15 international organizations, including Western embassies and the OSCE, to the accounts of Pridnestrovian enterprises.
Already in February, 24 Moldovan enterprises transferred 3,5 million lei to Transnistria. Moreover, one of the payers was the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, which paid for the maintenance of Romanian-language schools.
Over the past ten years, trade turnover between the two banks of the Dniester has increased 5,5 times. Pridnestrovie supplied electricity, cement, metals, grain and other goods worth $2019 million to Moldova in 255. At the same time, Pridnestrovian enterprises purchased scrap, medicines, food, and transport services worth $120 million from Moldova.
More than 1,5 thousand enterprises from both banks are involved in trade operations. However, 55% of Chisinau exports to the PMR are scrap for the Moldavian Metallurgical Plant (MMZ) in Rybnitsa and railway services for the delivery of this scrap. Now (MMZ) cannot pay for purchased and shipped scrap metal. Over the past 2 years, Moldovan economic agents received $170 million from MMZ alone.
